The Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) expects exploration efforts in the Voltaian basin by drilling wells between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.
According to the Chief Executive Officer, Opoku Ahweneeh Danquah, GNPC is busy exploring hydrocarbon prospectivity in Ghana’s onshore sedimentary basins, under the Reconnaissance license through a mix of geophysical, geological and geochemical techniques.
In addition, GNPC operates the shallow water block GH-WB-01 under the Reconnaissance license. Over the next two years, GNPC will acquire, process and interpret 3D seismic in the block to evaluate hydrocarbon potential and drill one well.
Mr. OA Danquah made the announcement in London, England on Thursday, January 12, at the Ghana Oil and Gas Roadshow 2023 at the Cavendish Conference Centre.
The presentation, which is the theme; ‘GNPC; Strategic Partner for the Delivery of Available E&P Projects, also touching on the GNPC operator drive.
“GNPC is constantly evaluating opportunities to leverage its technical competence and financial strength to unlock the much-needed hydrocarbon potential in our sedimentary basins,” he said.
He further encouraged “…all should strongly consider the opportunities available at this Roadshow and ensure that in GNPC you have reliable technical and commercial partners who work together to execute the work program that leads to the discovery of oil and gas that is needed.”
The roadshow featured presentations on an overview of Ghana’s upstream industry as well as Ghana’s Fiscal and Regulatory Regime and Energy Transition Strategy. There are technical presentations on Farm-in operations, blocks available between Q&A sessions.
In attendance were the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, Papa Owusu Ankomah is also an expert from the oil and gas industry.
The strategic objective of GNPC in the energy transition climate Mr. Danquah noted, “is to accelerate the exploitation of Ghana’s responsible oil and gas resources to meet the growing energy needs as we continue to complete and develop green energy projects.”
Increase participation in E&P licensing
The CEO revealed that the growth strategy led to the establishment of GNPC Explorco, a registered subsidiary, with Interest involved in six Exploration and Appraisal licenses in the offshore basin.
“Our strategic entry into the license is supported by our conviction based on our knowledge of hydrocarbon prospectivity and our commercial assessment of exposure and financial risk.
“As a paying partner, Explorco is part of the Contractor’s side and contributes experience and lessons learned from other exploration licenses with the aim of increasing exploration success and reducing project delivery times.
“In 2021, GNPC through its subsidiaries acquired Commercial Interests in Jubilee and TEN fields to increase participation and income from both fields,” he said.
GNPC; 1985 – 2011
GNPC, the Ghana National Oil Company (NOC), was established in 1983 by PNDC Law 64, to support the government’s objective of providing an adequate and reliable supply of petroleum products and reducing the country’s dependence on crude oil imports, through the country’s own development. petroleum resources.
In the early 2000s, GNPC’s focus shifted to being solely on the upstream energy sector, abandoning its earlier downstream operations.
Prior to the establishment of the Ghana Petroleum Commission in 2011, the GNPC in addition to its core mandate played a pseudo-regulatory role in assisting the Department of Energy in chartering roads for commercial discoveries in Ghana.
New GNPC
Furthermore, GNPC has transformed itself into a state-owned commercial entity with the strategic objective of leading the exploration, development, production and sustainable disposal of Ghana’s petroleum resources, using a mix of domestic and foreign investment in partnership with the community. Ghana.
The role of GNPC is to ensure the efficient supply of natural gas from the oil and gas fields to the Ghana National Gas Company to meet its growing energy needs by negotiating the efficient sale of gas from the production fields.
As a partner in all Petroleum licenses, GNPC has developed various competencies in the entire value chain to support partners in the execution of the agreed Work Program.
Having worked with different Operators over the years, GNPC has developed a highly skilled and adaptable workforce by adopting new technologies and operating strategies from prospective partners.
GNPC has for many years conducted its own regional studies as well as commissioned third party experts such as Robertson CGG and De-Goyler and Macnaughton to improve our understanding of the Ghanaian sedimentary basin.
GNPC seeks to leverage the wealth of knowledge and expertise of Ghana’s sedimentary basins in collaboration with new partners to unlock the remaining hydrocarbon potential for mutual benefit.
