The sentencing of eight people convicted of murdering nine people and abusing residents of the Glebelands hostel in Umlazi has been adjourned until February.
Glebelands hostel Murder
Eight people – former Durban Central detectives Bhekuzunzi Mdweshu, Khayelihle Mbuthuma, Vukani Mcobothi, Eugene Hlophe, Mcomekile Ntshangase, Mbewesila Mkhize, Mondli Mthethwa and Bongani Mbhele – were found guilty in October last year, of various murders and attempted murders. which took place in a hostel south of Durban, between August 2014 and March 2016.

Before the incident, the group conspired to eliminate or kill the hostel residents, who threatened the control of the hostel.
During the course of the offence, nine people were killed: Siniko Ncayiyane, Thulani Kati, Sipho Ndovela, Themba Pina, Nkosinathi Ndovela, William Mthembu, Thokozani Machi, Mzwandile Gawuza and Lucky Mtwa.
Seven others were wounded, leading to charges of attempted murder.

– Mdweshu was convicted of conspiracy to murder and four counts of attempted murder.
– Mbuthuma was convicted of three counts of murder.
– Mcobothi was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, four counts of attempted murder and three counts of murder.
-Hlophe was convicted of four counts of attempted murder.
-Ntshangase was convicted of four counts of attempted murder.
-Mkhize was convicted of two counts of murder.
-Mthethwa was convicted of two counts of attempted murder, two counts of murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
-Mbhele was found guilty of two counts of murder.
penalty
They were due to be sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, but the State requested an adjournment of the case to confirm the availability of a judge to sentence.
The sentencing process was adjourned until February 13, 2023.
The group has been taken into custody.
