The tragedy of the national wheelchair tennis team came to light earlier this week after it was attacked on its way back from Nigeria.
A statement from the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana said the unfortunate incident happened in Ogun state.
The wheelchair tennis team traveled to Nigeria to participate in the 2023 ITF World Team World Cup Qualifiers, which ended on February 12.
However, the statement said, on its way back to Ghana, the bus was intercepted by armed robbers around 2:30am.
The attackers injured three of the players and bolted with some valuables belonging to people on the bus.
Speaking to Rainbow Radio, the coach of the team said they were forced to travel by bus to Nigeria due to lack of resources.
“We have to travel by bus for three days to Nigeria. Imagine the situation of the team if we have to travel for three days on the road. That is regrettable,” she cried.
“Look at the situation of the team; had to travel for three days. He had a terrible ordeal. Each player receives Ghc100 in pocket money. It was difficult for us.
The coach added: “We went to represent Ghana, not ourselves. However, we participated in the tournament despite not having the support of the country.
“It is difficult for us. We have endured hardships, and when we returned, we were attacked, and if they used powerful weapons, I would not have survived to give this interview.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has sympathized with the team as it pledged its support after the attack.
