Ghana goalkeeping coach explains why Carlos Queiroz selected four goalkeepers for World Cup

Ghana’s goalkeeping coach has explained the rationale behind Carlos Queiroz’s decision to include four goalkeepers in the Black Stars’ World Cup camp, saying the move is aimed at improving the intensity and quality of training sessions rather than increasing matchday options.

Although only Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang are part of Ghana’s official 26-man World Cup squad, Solomon Agbasi has remained with the team in camp to support training preparations.

Speaking to Ghanafa.org, the coach revealed that Queiroz’s training methods place significant demands on goalkeepers, particularly during finishing and crossing drills, making regular rotation essential.

“We have four, and sometimes there’s speculation about why four goalkeepers. The reason is coach Carlos Queiroz likes to do a lot of finishing and crossing, and it’s important we have four so they can rotate. There’s less repetition for each one of them, and that keeps them healthy and sharp.”

He also praised the atmosphere within the goalkeeping group, saying healthy competition has gone hand in hand with strong unity.

“We’ve created a competitive yet positive environment. We brought a certain energy and spirit to training. The cooperation has been unbelievable.”

The coach further commended the attitude of Ati-Zigi, Asare, Anang and Agbasi, saying their humility, professionalism and commitment to representing Ghana have been outstanding throughout the tournament.
