Ghana earned $9.5 million from World Cup participation – GFA

“Ghana earns $9.5 million in World Cup group stage,” he said on Asempa FM, as quoted by 3Sports.

“The current plan is to convert the Ghanaman Center of Excellence into at least a 3-star hotel with a capacity of 60 to 70. We want to raise the standards of the Ghanaian Football Center of Excellence to host matches of all our national teams.

Ghana suffered a group stage exit at the World Cup after being paired in a group with Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Otto Addo’s men managed to win against South Korea, but lost to Portugal and Uruguay, as they finished bottom of the group.

Before the tournament, the Ministry of Sports had estimated that $8 million would be spent on the Black Stars’ group stage campaign.

However, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif confirmed after the World Cup that $5,171,840 was spent on the team in Qatar, thus saving almost $3 million in the initial budget.

“Our budget in the group stage is $8.1 million. From this budget, Mr. Speaker, the total expenditure for group stage participation is $5,171,840. Mustapha Ussif spoke on the floor of Parliament in December.

“These expenditures include free appearances, per diems, flight arrangements, medical, equipment logistics, and hospitality.”

He added: “Mr. Speaker reason for the surplus of $ 3 million after we exited the group stage as a result of the wise management of the ministry of resources as well as the ministry’s decision to negotiate a qualifying bonus for the next round instead of paying a winning bonus per match.

“What that means is that even though our black stars beat South Korea in the second group match, we don’t pay the win bonus for that game.”

The Black Stars’ next task will be in March when they play in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
