Ghana defender Jerome Opoku relives dream World Cup debut after Panama win
Jerome Opoku has described his FIFA World Cup debut as a dream come true after helping Ghana keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 victory over Panama.
The defender made his first appearance at football’s biggest tournament on Wednesday, with family members in the stands to witness the special occasion.
“It was a dream come true to play in front of the fans, and my family was there. It’s something I dreamed of growing up,” Opoku said.
The centre-back was pleased with both his individual display and Ghana’s defensive performance.
“I thought it was a solid performance. I’m happy to keep a clean sheet with my defenders, the backline and the two goalkeepers. It was a team effort.”
Opoku also admitted that the emotions got the better of him when Ghana scored the winning goal.
“When the goal went in, the emotions were high. I knee-slided, and I didn’t even score. It was amazing.”
The victory marked a memorable start to the 27-year-old’s World Cup journey as attention turns to Tuesday’s big match against England.
