Newly elected Rep. George Santos (RN.Y.) will be the subject of a “major announcement” from the local Republican Party on Wednesday.
Elected officials, candidates and party officials from the Nassau County GOP will come together at HQ to make a “major announcement” about the “disgraced” congressman, each press release from the organization that Semafor’s Kadia Goba flag Tuesday.
He will “deliver the strongest statement yet of the Nassau GOP’s position on Santos,” the statement added.
The Nassau County GOP endorsed Santos before it emerged he had made up various details about his background.
Committee chairman Joseph Cairo said last month he was “deeply disappointed” by the revelations, slamming Santos for violating “public trust by making false statements about his background, experience and education, among other issues.”
Last week, Santos was slammed by his predecessor, former Rep. Tom Suozzi (DN.Y.), is a “fraudster.” In a withering op-ed for The New York Times, Suozzi said he was “lost by the many distortions and lies that Mr. Santos has told about himself, his finances and his history and his ties to Long Island and northeast Queens. .”
While the details of the Nassau County GOP’s upcoming announcement remain unknown, political strategist Mike Dawidziak suggests Santos will face calls to step down from the role — which he was only officially sworn in to last week.
“They have said pretty much everything else, they have said they will not support him in two years,” Davidziak said, per the Associated Press. “So if this is a major announcement, it seems like the only thing to say is to ask him to resign.”
