The conflict between Gemini and the Genesis group has been spiraling, especially with the latest developments. Gemini has officially discontinued the interest-bearing product, which is the flagship Earn program. This message was distributed via email on January 10.
Gemini has terminated its existing Master Loan Agreement with Genesis Global Capital, which is responsible for operating the Earn program for its customers.
This move by Gemini comes as an extension of the general dispute that occurred between Genesis and itself. In an email sent to Gemini customers on Tuesday, Gemini said it was shutting down the program in an effort to get Genesis to repay $900 million the company owed exchange clients.
The email read:
We are writing to let you know that Gemini—acting as your agent—has terminated the Master Loan Agreement (MLA) between you and Genesis Global Capital, LLC (Genesis), effective January 8, 2023
The company also added “This formally terminate the Acquisition Program and require Genesis to return all outstanding assets under the program. Existing redemption requests are unaffected and continue to await fulfillment by Genesis.
As mentioned above, the email states that current redemptions will not be affected and that there will be a resolution for customers who wish to recover their assets.
‘Highest Priority’ To Return User Funds
To continue to assure users of the asset’s retrieval, the exchange said it will provide timely updates on its progress twice a week. The days mentioned were Tuesday and Friday, until the situation began to appear.
The exchange said that recovering users’ assets is their ‘highest priority’ and that they will take ‘extremely urgent’ action to resolve the issue.
Genesis has become the main partner for the Earn Gemini service, which usually allows users to earn 8% interest in crypto. Withdrawals on the platform stop at the end of 2022. Now customers with Earning balances will see it as ‘Pending Balance’ until the exchange recovers their funds.
What does Genesis say?
A Genesis spokesperson said in a statement that the company disagreed with everything Gemini said. Further, the spokesperson said:
Genesis was disappointed that Gemini conducted a public media campaign despite a productive private dialogue between the parties. This is a very comples process that will take some additional time, but we are committed to moving as quickly as possible.
The Genesis lending arm closed in November 2022 following the collapse of FTX. This then locks Gemini Earn user funds on the platform.
