California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) pulled no punches Monday with blistering criticism of Fox News, which he accused of “doing nothing about gun safety, not something that’s been around for decades” while visiting victims of the weekend mass shooting. at the Monterey Park ballroom that killed 11.
“It’s disgusting what they say, what these people say every single night,” Newsom told reporters about the prime time of private time on the conservative channel owned by Rupert Murdoch.
“There’s xenophobia, they’re racial priming, what they’ve done to keep crime and violence in this country, by scapegoating, and not doing anything about gun safety, that’s not something that’s been going on for decades,” he said.
Newsom then summarized what he said is the message from Fox after every horrific mass shooting:
″’It’s not the right time, it’s not the right time, it’s not the right time.’ Rinse, repeat. ‘Not the right time, Sandy Hook, not the right time, rinse, repeat. Uvalde.’ Remember Uvalde? Remember? Rinse, repeat. You don’t remember Borderline here, 13 people, which was a few years ago, you have to look for one. Rinse, repeat. Not a damn thing they do. And we know. And we let them get away with it.
During the visit, Newsom tweeted that he was “pulled over to be briefed on another shooting,” killing seven people in Half Moon Bay.
“Tragedy after tragedy,” he wrote.
