use of GAF forces in Bawku is unfortunate; possibility to escalate the conflict – security analyst
Security analyst, Colonel Festus Aboagye (Rtd), has slammed the Ghana Armed Forces for using force during the recent disturbances in Bawku.
The military has been accused of killing ten civilians which the Ghana Armed Forces denied and explained that the personnel only went to the area to neutralize some civilians who shot sporadically.
The GAF explained that personnel from the Force “carried out a cordon and search operation together with the Bawku Police in Pateleme Public Area” to disarm the residents.
Colonel Aboagye said that the results of the cordon and search activities have defeated the explanation given by the military in the area because the exercise did not produce the weapons that the exercise was conducted on.
“When you organize a cordon and search operation, it is based on intelligence items and there must be evidence to justify the operation. I have the opportunity to connect the incident in Bawku with Ayawaso West Wuogon that there are indeed armed elements with military grade weapons and that is why the military surrounded and searched the area that said, the military always seizes weapons and must give them away. it is not enough to just issue a statement that we are with those who sporadically fire their weapons.
“Any activity carried out by the military must be at least two-dimensional; it must have a technical military dimension and information and you can strengthen the information activity by providing evidence so that at the end of the cordon operation and the search, weapons must be seized and made available to everyone,” said Col Aboagye to Selorm Adonoo in Witness News.
