Funke Akindele’s ‘Battle on Buka Street’ makes history in U.S. cinemas

On Wednesday, film production and distribution platform FilmOne Entertainment (Nigeria) announced that “Battle on Buka Street” grossed more than $61,000 in United States theaters.

In a statement, he noted that over the four-day new year’s weekend, the film grossed $61,000.

The film, directed by Funke Akindeledistributed by FillmOne and Part Two Media in the United States with support from Amplify Africa.

The film tells the story of two women who find themselves in trouble again after a long-time rivalry when they start a food business on the same street.

The cast includes Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Femi Jacobs, Tobi Makinde, Sola Sobowale, Kevin Ikeduba, Nkem Owoh, Tina Mba, Femi Jacobs and Wumi Toriola.

According to FilmOne, with the support of Amplify Africa, the film, which has been released since December, is the first in the US.

Controlled release at 11 Regal Cinemas in a reduced show leading to nationwide run times.

He added that this is the first Indigenous Nollywood release in the United States.

Famous American Cinemas- Regal, also noted that the film was extended to 11 other locations in the second week due to high demand and sold-out shows.

Exceeded expectations

After the wide reception, Craig Shurn of Part Two Media said that he always knew that ‘Battle on the Street’ had the potential to do well in the US.

According to him, the results and blockbuster status in Nigeria are decisive, but he did not expect these numbers for the first Nollywood release in the US.

“Full credit to the star, director and producer Funke Akindele, who did the magic for his 15 million Instagram followers,” he said.

He also stressed that Africans in the US are hungry for films like this.

“The US African diaspora has been underserved and starved for authentic African content, especially in theater, for the longest time. It’s an honor to bring ‘Battle on Buka Street’ to them. It’s a great start, and the future is exciting.”

Moses Babatope and Kene Okwuosa, of FilmOne Entertainment, added that with the powerful ‘Battle on Buka Street’ show, Nigerian movies have come full circle, gaining more attention from international audiences.

“As the first indigenous Nollywood release in the US, this film performed beyond expectations and is an indication of what we should expect this year for global film releases from Nigeria. In the coming months and years, we expect Nollywood releases to be a consistent feature in cinemas in USA, Europe and others,” he said.

FilmOne and Regal Cinemas also announced that the US and UK should expect Toyin Abraham “Ijakumo: Born Again Stripper” on January 13.
