Fulham, Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrovic charged after incidents during FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United | Football News

Aleksandar Mitrovic faces a lengthy ban after the Football Association announced the standard punishment for his dismissal against Manchester United would be “clearly insufficient”.

Mitrovic gave Fulham the lead in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford but was sent off after trying to grab referee Chris Kavanagh’s arm in a chaotic few minutes.

Willian and head coach Marco Silva were also given their marching orders during the period, but it was Mitrovic’s actions in Fulham’s 3-1 defeat that have come under scrutiny.

Fulham were charged by the FA for failing to “ensure the players behaved in an orderly manner”, while Silva was charged with a number of offences.

Dermot Gallagher explains why Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off in the FA Cup for pushing the referee, while Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was not for the same incident in the Premier League against Liverpool.

FA statement in full

“Fulham’s Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrovic have been charged following an incident which occurred in or around the 72nd minute of their match against Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday 19 March.

“It is indicated that Marco Silva used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behavior towards the referee of the match; he used abusive and/or insulting words against the official four times before his dismissal; and he also used abusive and/or insulting words and /or behavior and/or behavior towards the four officials after the expulsion.

“Furthermore, it was alleged that throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee was not correct.

“The FA said the standard punishment to be meted out to Aleksandar Mitrovic for the offense of violent conduct committed against the match referee is clearly insufficient.

“Furthermore, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s behavior and/or language was considered inappropriate and/or abusive and/or insulting and/or threatening after his dismissal.

“It is also alleged that Fulham failed to ensure a player conduct himself in an orderly fashion.”
