In 2011, Tazmin Brits was involved in a horrific car accident that left her severely injured and losing her will to live.
Her dream of competing in the London Olympics as a javelin thrower was also dashed when she lay in a hospital bed for three months.
‘I have to teach myself to walk’
“I had to teach myself to put the pan under me to pee, or get out of bed to go to the commode. I had to learn to walk,” he told the BBC in an interview.
A near-fatal accident occurred in Potchefstroom, where the British were celebrating their qualification for the Games.
His lack of concentration caused him to lose control and be thrown from the car.
He suffered a broken pelvis and hip and a broken bladder. He required multiple painful surgeries.

“I think I will never be able to walk again, I will never be able to exercise again,” she told wanitascriczone.com in 2019.
He added: “Along with my dream, all the sponsors and the will to live.
“I tried to end my life on more than one occasion. I felt lost and directionless.
World junior champions in the javelin in 2007, the Brits have been helped by cricket and on Sunday they will try to pull South Africa to victory over hot favorites Australia in the final of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup.
Injuries were on his mind again on Saturday when the Brits took a spectacular flying catch to dismiss England’s Alice Capsey in South Africa’s stunning six-run semi-final win at Newlands.
“When I dived, I thought it was a vein that popped up, it stood out. But they pushed it down. We are not sure if it is a bone or not,” said the 32-year-old man.
“I spoke to our physio Mo, please help me get back on the field. The doctor and he just made sure there were no broken bones.

Four catches
Brits’ all-round performance on Friday saw him take four catches after scoring 68 in a team total of 164-4.
After his javelin dreams faded, the Brits made his international cricket debut in 2018 but did not make the squad for the 2020 T20 World Cup.
The form in the 2023 tournament, however, is on an upward curve, reflecting the changing fortunes of the team.
Scores of 12 and one were followed by 45 against Australia and 50 not out in the final pool match against Bangladesh, which allowed South Africa to enter the semi-finals on net run rate.
His runs on Friday came from 55 balls and featured six fours and two sixes.
On Sunday, the Brits will try to create a fairytale script in front of their home fans at Newlands.
“I think it almost clicked today. I hope everything clicks against Australia,” Brits said.
“I think we always believed we could do it.”
