Frank Lampard: Everton manager insists he is confident in himself despite humbling against Brighton | Football News

Frank Lampard insisted he is confident in his managerial abilities despite seeing his Everton side lose 4-1 at home to Brighton on Tuesday night.

Goals from Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Solly March and Pascal Gross made Demarai Gray’s late penalty a footnote and left the Toffees just one point above the Premier League’s bottom three having played a game more than the four teams currently below.

It means Lampard has overseen just three wins in 18 league games this season, including just one in the previous 10.

Speaking after the final whistle at Goodison Park, he said: “It was very disappointing, even in the first half, I would say. [It was] mistake from us for that goal, but I think the general play is pretty even, we had a chance.

The Back Pages Tonight team talk about Frank Lampard’s future at Goodison Park and insist the former Chelsea boss is still a popular figure in the industry despite recent results.

“But then three goals in six minutes, a defensive error from us and it’s game over.

“After that, the game went a bit in between. We got the last goal, but at 4-0 the game ended. Those six minutes were very important for the game with individual mistakes and collective defensive problems.

“We’re all in this together, so it’s not a problem to be angry. We’re disappointed, we want to win the game.

“Since I’ve been here, I’ve been in a relegation battle [both last season and this season]. I can’t control my speech but I can’t focus.

“I’m very confident in myself, but I can’t predict the future. It’s Manchester United [in the FA Cup] next and that’s all we can see.”

The 44-year-old was asked about the inevitable pressure of the Toffees’ recent results.

“You have to get used to the fact that you won’t win every week, you won’t win games, so we have to go back to work – simple as that,” he added.

“I’m a Premier League football manager, there’s pressure in the job wherever you are.

“I can only focus on what I can control.”

And although he refused to go into detail, Lampard revealed that he will strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

“We’re trying to help the squad, I’ve said that. We know when January comes, we want to help the squad, so we’ll see.”

Campbell: This is not Lampard’s team

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes that, despite his struggles this season, Frank Lampard should be given more time and support in the January transfer window.

He believes that another incoming manager will not have the squad he wants or needs, thus continuing the cycle of poor results for Everton.

After watching the game Sky Sports NewsCampbell said: “I fancied Everton to do something. Until half time, Everton is still in. They are back in Brighton, have some opportunities.

“But six crazy minutes in the second half, going from 1-0 to 4-0 and you can’t do that in the Premier League.

“I think the relationship between Lampard and the fans is there, but there will be questions.

“You have to start asking whether Lampard is the right man for the job, you certainly are.

“If you pull the trigger and throw him away, you’re going to bring someone else to do the same thing again. So where do you end up? Give him a chance to build something.

“[The situation] it takes a smart mind. It takes calm about what’s going to happen.

“We know what the problem is and there are certainly things that Everton need to do in this January transfer window. There needs to be some serious changes, some improvements to the squad and Frank Lampard needs to demand.

“I think he deserves more time in the job. There needs to be a change at the club. He hasn’t been fully supported and he needs to be.”
