The F1 Commission has approved a number of updates ahead of the 2023 season, including new wet weather tire specifications from Imola and relaxed rules on radio communication from teams to drivers.

F1 has rewritten the rules to ensure reduced points for shortened races, after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen clinched the second title in a confusing situation last season.
The Formula 1 Commission, which brings together 10 teams and governs the FIA as well as commercial rights holders, met in London on Tuesday ahead of the season-opening race in Bahrain next week.
The key decision statement – rubber-stamped by the FIA World Motor Sport Council – included a wording change “to ensure that shorter races have reduced points even if they do not end with a suspended race.”

Last year’s rain-hit Japanese race was halted after two laps and resumed more than two hours later, where 28 of the scheduled 53 laps were completed and even Verstappen wasn’t sure how many points he had won.
It turned out to be full points, enough for Verstappen to clinch the title with four races to spare. The FIA explained that the reduced points rule only applies when the race is suspended and cannot be resumed.
The Commission also agreed “to relax the regulation of radio messages to and from drivers at all times during the competition.”

He said that changes to wet weather tires have been approved, with Pirelli producing a new compound that performs better and does not require the use of tire blankets used to get the tires up to temperature. It will be introduced from Imola in May.
What else has changed?
Bahrain, Jeddah, Melbourne, Baku and Miami will have changes in the Drag Reduction System (DRS) zone to make overtaking either easier or harder, while Melbourne will have four DRS activation zones.

The team and the engine manufacturer will close the winter factory in 2023, in addition to the August break.
A cap adjustment was agreed to allow the team to spend an extra $1.2 million, on top of the base $135 million for the season, to reflect a calendar that has reached a record 23 rounds and that has been extended to longer distances and more expensive.
The rules were also updated “to allow easier access to factories for the FIA audit team, in order to monitor the team’s and PU’s (Power Unit) manufacturers’ adherence to financial regulations”.
The meeting was chaired by Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA single seat director Nikolas Tombazis. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who has agreed to step down from the sport after the recent controversy, did not attend.
When and where is the test?
Testing will take place in Bahrain over three consecutive days, starting on Thursday, February 23 and ending on Saturday, February 25, with each day divided into two full sessions.
