The former Minority leader assured to abide by the resolution to support the new leader
The former Minority leader in Parliament said he would abide by the resolution for a new leadership meeting.
National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia said that all the challenges that arose after the removal of Haruna Iddrisu, James Kluste Avedzi, and Muntaka Mubarak as Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, and Minority Chief Whip, have been resolved.
To that end, he said the party and the Minority caucus had passed a resolution to assemble a new minority leader.
After the crunch meeting on Monday, February 6, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said “The meeting was called by the Council of Elders, the National leadership, and our caucus in Parliament to announce a resolution on what we consider to be a threatening crisis…
“You can see from the enthusiasm that the challenges that arose from the announcement of the new leadership of our caucus in Parliament have all been resolved. All concerns have been addressed, so we are hopeful.
After the meeting, former Deputy Minority Leader James Kluset Avedzi said, “I am writing on behalf of my colleagues to thank the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress and former President HE John Dramani Mahama for resolving the challenges that plagued the Party in Parliament after the meeting .the announcement of a change of leadership in Parliament.
“We former leaders consisting of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, former Minority Leader, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi, Deputy Minority Leader and Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, Chief Minority Whip assured the Council of Elders of the Party when they met on Tuesday January 17, 2023, that we will adhere to the resolution of the challenge. This assurance was disclosed in the Council when Hon.Haruna Iddrisu asked me to summarize our position on the matter.Thank you very much Council of Elders and HE John Dramani Mahama.
“We want to assure the new minority leader of our full support for the interests of the Party as we prepare to wrest power from the insensitive NPP in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
“The NDC remains the only hope for the good people of Ghana so that we remain united to realize the hopes of Ghanaians.”
The proposed changes have caused sharp divisions among opposition MPs.
For instance, Asawase Member of Parliament Muntaka Mubarak told the party’s national executive that he could remove the Minority leadership just by writing a letter to him.
“If you can’t write a letter for an appointment, how can you write one to disappoint?” He asked at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday.
Muntaka was not happy with the changes made in the Minority leadership by the party.
He believed that the decision was made by some executives even though the statement announcing it was signed by Secretary General Fifi Kwetey.
He added “We don’t want to create animosity between us unnecessarily, we believe that due process should be followed.”
He reiterated “If the right process is followed, we will be happy and grateful for the opportunity to serve. We hope they will help quickly hear the matter.
Over sixty NDC Mps signed a petition to the party executive to reverse the decision.
According to them, the decision is unpopular and they want it reversed.
