Former Gombe speaker dies in auto crash

Former Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Nasiru Nono, died in a car accident along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway on Thursday.

Confirming the death of Mr. Nono, former Secretary People’s Democratic Party in the country, Buba Shanu, said this incident is unfortunate.

Mr. Shanu said that Mr. Nono went with a former member of the House of Representatives, Haruna Fada.

However, they said Mr. Fada survived the accident and is currently receiving treatment.

“He (Mr. Nono), died in a motorcycle accident on the Abuja Keffi Expressway. He was traveling with Hon. Haruna Usman Fada, a former member of the House of Representatives who survived and is currently undergoing treatment,” Shanu said.

Mr. Nono gained national prominence in 2018 when a mace was allegedly stolen by a legislator.

Police found a mace behind the National Industrial Court complex in the country, which was thrown by an unknown person.

He contested the Gombe Central senatorial district under the PDP in 2019.

He described the death of the former lawmaker as a monumental loss, not only to his family, but to the country and Nigeria as a whole.

Mr. Inuwa said the late former legislator was a humble and unassuming politician known for his commitment to the welfare of his constituents and citizens in general.

The governor recalled that as the Speaker of the State Assembly, Mr. Nono displayed wisdom, dexterity and statesmanship while leading the state legislature and earned the respect and loyalty of his colleagues.
