Another death has been recorded in the Nigerian sports fraternity following the death of a former ex Falconets coach, Dan Evumena.
According to a close friend, Evumena, one of Nigeria’s foremost female football coaches, died after a ‘brief illness’ at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC Asaba.
While confirming Evumena’s death to PREMIUM TIMES, Mansur Abdullahi, another respected women’s football coach and former Technical staff of the Nigeria U-20 Women’s team, said the death was heartbreaking.
“Well, he is a hard worker, dedicated to his work, and disciplined. He is a senior citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he retired from the civil service as a senior immigration officer,” Coach Mansur told PREMIUM TIMES.
“He is my friend; just last year we graduated from London University in Sports Management. It’s quite sad.”
A journey of no return
According to Coach Mansur, the late Evumena fell ill just before Christmas and unfortunately never recovered.
“He fell ill on the 24th of last month and a few days ago, he fell into a coma and succumbed,” he said.
Although hurt by his death, Evumena’s legacy leading the Falconets to the quarter-finals of the 2008 World Cup will be remembered by all.

“When he’s a coach, he’s a tactician. There’s no two ways about it and he’s a disciplinarian.
“In every aspect of life, if you don’t have discipline, then you have to forget. It’s quite sad.
“She is a former president of the Nigeria women’s football coaches association and a former chairman of the Delta State Football Coaches Association. In fact, she was the immediate past chairman. Coach Mansur recalled.
Death is inevitable
While mourning the death of another sports figure, Coach Mansur advised everyone to always think that death is inevitable.

“Death is certain. Unfortunately, now it’s our turn in the sports industry, many will be involved.
“You can imagine in a short period of time, less than two weeks, we have lost the chairman of the department and the chairman of the state association.
“It’s not about industry, it’s about death and it’s a call to every human being to think about his death because of course we came to this world in a different time and we will also return one day” he concluded.
