Burkina Faso football has been plunged into mourning following the death of former international defender Ben Aziz Zagre at the age of 27 after a battle with bone cancer.

The central defender, who represented Burkina Faso at various levels, had been suffering from bone cancer in his knee, an illness that forced him to bring his playing career to a premature end in 2025.

Zagre was widely regarded as one of Burkina Faso’s promising defensive talents and proudly wore the national colours from the youth ranks through to the senior national team.

Throughout his career, he earned admiration for his commitment, professionalism and passion for representing his country.

The defender also enjoyed spells in Portugal, featuring for clubs including Vitoria Guimaraes SC and AD Fafe.

Following the news of his passing, his former clubs paid heartfelt tributes to the player, remembering both his qualities on the pitch and his character off it.

The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) confirmed the sad news in an official statement released on social media.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Burkinabe Football Federation learned of the passing of Burkinabe international Ben Aziz Zagre at the age of 27, following an illness,” the statement read.

The federation described Zagre as a dedicated servant of Burkinabe football whose commitment, patriotism and love for the Stallions jersey helped contribute to the growth and visibility of the sport in the country.

“Through his dedication and exemplary career, he contributed to the prominence of Burkinabe football and left behind the memory of a respected player, appreciated by his teammates, coaches and fans,” the statement added.

The FBF extended its condolences to Zagre’s family, loved ones, former teammates and the entire football community, paying tribute to a player whose life and career were cut tragically short.

His death represents a significant loss for Burkina Faso football, with many across the African football fraternity mourning a talented player who passed away in the prime of his life.
