Former Brazilian justice minister Anderson Torres, who was in charge of public security in Brasilia during the invasion of government buildings a week ago, was arrested on Saturday.

Torres was arrested in Brasilia after returning to Brazil. He has been on holiday in Florida, the same US state as his former boss, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, who has traveled after losing the election last year.

Demosthenes Torres, one of the former ministers’ lawyers, confirmed the arrest to Reuters.

The former minister said on Thursday that evidence produced by police was taken out of context when his home was raided this week.

Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the arrest of Anderson Torres on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear what the charges were, but Moraes called the charges “omission” and “connivance”.

Protests last Sunday by Bolsonaro’s supporters culminated in the government building in Brasilia.

The director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, said at the beginning of the week “the various omissions, allegedly intentional, carried out by those responsible for public safety in the Federal District contributed to the practice of terrorist acts.”

Documents ‘leaked out of context’: Torres

Brazilian police found a draft decree at Torres’ home on Thursday that they said was a proposal to disrupt the results of the October election in which Bolsonaro lost to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

According to Torres, the document was “leaked out of context” after being seized while he was away from his home, and may have been part of a pile of papers to be disposed of.

“Everything will sink in at the right time,” the former minister said in a post on Twitter on Thursday.

After learning of Moraes’ detention order, Torres also said on Twitter that he would interrupt his vacation and return to Brazil to surrender.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino has given Torres until Monday to return, after which he said he would begin extradition procedures.
