Food poisoning in Oyibi: FDA suspends Yellow Side operations
The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) said it received a notification through the Food Safety Alert System on Sunday, January 22, 2023, of an outbreak of foodborne illness reported to have occurred in Oyibi, in Adenta Municipality, in the Greater Accra region.
The FDA said in line with its Food Safety Emergency Response Plan, a joint investigation with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) began immediately.
“The investigation revealed that 53 people developed symptoms of foodborne illness after consuming waakye or rice and tomatoes from a food vendor called Yellow Sisi located at Bush Canteen, Oyibi suburb,” a statement issued by the FDA on January 27 said.
It added, “At present one (1) person has been reported dead, but the cause of death has not been confirmed. The environmental assessment of the food preparation site located in Malejor and the three vending sites at Bush Canteen, Prison Joint and Sharp Curve Joint revealed that there are poor food practices that can lead to food contamination, resulting in foodborne disease outbreaks.
“The FDA has suspended the operation of Yellow Side until measures are put in place to ensure that their activities are carried out in order to prevent future incidents.”
The FDA said it is launching a Street Food Vending Scheme in November 2021, in conjunction with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
The scheme, developed under FAO’s Healthy Street Food Incentive Project, aims to issue vendors who comply with Street Food Vending Permits.
Consumers must insist on seeing the permit at their favorite restaurant before honoring the service. We strongly urge street vendors to get a permit.
