BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (January 11, 2023) — Five Southeastern Conference men’s track and field athletes were named to the preseason watch list for The Bowerman, announced Wednesday by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Named to the SEC’s watch list are Georgia’s Matthew Boling, LSU’s Sean Burrell, Georgia’s Kyle Garland, Arkansas’ Ayden Owens-Delerme and Arkansas’ Wayne Pinnock. A total of 10 athletes nationwide were named on the watch list.
Alabama’s Eliud Kipsang, Arkansas’ Carey McLeod, Georgia’s Marc Minichello, Florida’s Jacory Patterson and LSU’s Claudio Romero are listed among the other three athletes who also received votes.
Six SEC athletes were named to Bowerman’s women’s watch list on Wednesday.
The Bowerman is the highest honor given to the most outstanding athlete in track and field of the year. SEC women’s athletes have won Bowerman each of the last four times the award has been awarded: Georgia’s Keturah Orji in 2018, LSU’s Sha’Carri Richardson in 2019, Texas A&M’s Athing Mu in 2021 and Kentucky’s Abby Steiner in 2022.
SEC male athletes have won the Bowerman in the past six to eight years when the award was presented: Texas A&M’s Deon Lendore in 2014, Florida’s Marquis Dendy in 2015, Arkansas’ Jarrion Lawson in 2016, Tennessee’s Christian Coleman in 2017, Florida’s Grant Holloway in 2019 and LSU’s JuVaughn Harrison in 2021.
Bowerman will be presented in December at the annual USTFCCCA Convention to be held in Aurora, Colo.
