Five people died after a boat carrying mourners sank in Volta Lake
Five people have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying mourners ran aground on Lake Volta on Saturday morning.
The boat was carrying mourners from Azizakpe to Azizakpe when it crashed on the lake. Five people are reported to have died instantly while rescue efforts are underway to find other survivors.
The incident which occurred around 9 am on Saturday is suspected to be caused by strong winds.
According to eyewitnesses, about 100 people were crossing Azizakpe, an island community in a 40-seater passenger boat when the incident happened.
The five people who died were three children aged three and two girls. All passengers were not wearing life jackets.
In January, eight school children from Atikagome community in Sene East District in Bono East Region died when the boat they were taking to school capsized on Lake Volta on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed the incident.
The deceased were among 20 school children on a boat traveling from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school was located.
