PRB and WRPA have provided Standard Contracts for players and agents
Wales’ four professional areas have been cleared to start officially re-signing players after agreeing the first Standard Contracts in Welsh rugby history.
The Professional Rugby Board and the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association presented standard contracts for various players and agents on the final day which will make existing and new offers legally binding.
Players threatened to take strike action ahead of last month’s Six Nations match against England amid contract uncertainty since last summer.
Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets have only been allowed to make verbal offers in recent weeks.
The WRU said the Rugby Management Board (RMB) and members of the PRB completed a “significant amount of work” on contracts and licensing rights, receiving official acceptance from the Welsh Rugby Players Association (WRPA) and the players’ agents there.
“This is a significant step forward in the process we will be taking which will secure a sustainable future for the professional game in Wales,” PRB chairman Malcolm Wall said.
“A lot of hard work has gone into getting to this stage and we are pleased to say that four professional teams are now able to offer legitimate contracts where necessary.
“We remain very grateful to the players themselves for their patience and understanding and look forward now to the point where a comprehensive agreement can be signed that supports PRB’s strategy for the future of the game – the moment that proves this latest development is now closer than ever.
“A lot of credit must also go to the directors at every professional team for making sure we get to this critical and important stage for the game in Wales.”
