Made by Patrick Sean Smith, Greece premiered on ABC Family in July 2007, and ran for four seasons until March 2011. The series focuses on sororities and fraternities on the fictional campus of the University of Cyprus-Rhodes and stars. Spencer Grammer, Scott Michael Foster, Jake McDorman and Yakub Zakar.
After the show came out, the creator sat down with it Entertainment Weekly to discuss the finale and the potential for a spinoff. He admitted that while fans were sad to see the show go, they thought it would have ended sooner.
“To give a little backstory, we kind of come into season four with a gift,” Smith said EW. “We all thought it was over at the end of the third season. So when I wrote the spring break episode, ‘All Children Grow Up,’ I thought it was over. We actually shot the last flash-forward scene of the show when it was over and we also have a season-ender. Fortunately, our ratings went up in the third season, and people kind of rallied to the show, so we didn’t have to show it. We entered the next 10 [episodes] said, ‘This is a gift. We have these next 10 episodes to wrap up as opposed to just trying to do everything in flash-forward.’ I’m trying to figure out what the heart of the show really is. There are so many memories and moments and emotions that happen at home.
The show’s ending leaves it open to a potential spin-off series, but Smith says that wasn’t intentional. The only goal is to bring the characters to life for the fans. The potential to continue the story in another series is just an added bonus.
“When it looks like we’re done at the end of the third season, I’m obviously very emotional, just about how much I love the show, and how much I love working with everyone,” he said. “But the thing that I miss the most for me personally and selfishly is the character. I once wanted to end the series with ‘It’s over,’ the last nail in the coffin. Maybe a little open in my mind just so that the character can live in my imagination. And if there is a spin- off, of course!”
Freeform announced plans to debut Greece: Reunion in 2016. The two-hour film will bring the cast together for a five-year reunion, according to TVLine. But the network decided not to move forward with the film.
Discussing the network’s decision in June 2017, Smith told TVLine that he was “disappointed.”
The showrunner said, “I sent a script to Freeform in February that they seemed to like so much that they wanted to move forward. We reached out to cast. Then Freeform told me they didn’t have the money to make it this year … maybe next year. … So, I’m obviously disappointed but grateful for the time I was able to spend with the character again. I’m sorry I can’t share the work with the fans.
