The final collection of results for the Kano governorship election has begun at the state collation centre.
Voting has ended and votes have been counted in all of Kano through 11,000 polling units in 44 Local Government Areas (LGA).
Kano has a total of 5,594,193 eligible voters (who collect PVC Permanent Voter Cards). During the presidential and national assembly elections two weeks ago, only 1,746,410 voted.
A total of 17 candidates are vying to succeed Abdullahi Ganduje whose eight-year term ends on May 29.
But a fierce contest was seen between the candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Nasiru Gawuna; Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the New Nigeria’s Peoples Party (NNPP) and Sadiq Wali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The election, which was earlier scheduled for March 11, was postponed by a week to March 18 due to the delay encountered by INEC in asking the presidential election petition court to grant permission to reorganize the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System to be used for the election. The court previously granted the PDP and the Labor Party access to inspect sensitive materials used for the election after rejecting the results and filing a case with the court.
To be declared the winner, a candidate must score the highest number of votes and at least 25 percent of the votes in 29 of the 44 LGAs in Kano state.
