AS Cremén forward Felix Afena-Gyan has turned down an invitation to join Ghana’s U23 squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 20-year-old has been called up to add to the Black Meteors squad to face Algeria in back-to-back games for a place at this year’s U23 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the former AS Roma player rejected the call even though the club accepted to join another team.
GHANAsoccernet.com can reveal the Ghana FA has submitted all travel requirements to the Serie A club, but the player has decided not to join Ibrahim Tanko’s side.
Afena-Gyan was a key member of the Ghana squad that defeated Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs in March last year.
He was then disnubbed for the final World Cup tournament in Qatar after he was not in the final squad list named by Otto Addo.
Afena-Gyan joined newly promoted Serie A club Cremonese in the summer from Roma for around $7 million on a permanent deal.
He is yet to score in Italy’s top flight this campaign after providing one assist after 16 appearances.
He has scored twice in three games in the Coppa Italia where Cremonese have reached the semi-finals after eliminating Napoli and Roma in the process.
