FDA Suspends Yellow Side Operation After Food Contamination Incident

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
has suspended the joint operation of food vending, Yellow Side after the food contamination incident caused one death and 53 others were hospitalized.

The action follows an environmental assessment of the food preparation site located in Malejor and three vending sites at Bush Canteen, Prison Joint, and Sharp Curve Joint by the FDA and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The investigation revealed poor food handling practices that could have led to food contamination, leading to outbreaks of foodborne illness.

“Investigations revealed that fifty-three (53) people developed symptoms of foodborne illness after consuming waakye or rice and tomatoes from a food vendor called Yellow Sisi located at Bush Canteen, Ovibi suburb.

So far one (1) person has been reported dead, but the cause of death has not been confirmed,” said a statement from the FDA.

The FDA said the suspension will be in place until steps are taken to ensure its activities are in place to prevent future incidents.

In November 2021, the FDA launched the Street Food Vending Scheme together with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Councils to ensure adherence to food safety measures by vendors.

The scheme, developed under FAO’s Healthy Street Food Incentive Project, issues vendors who comply with Street Food Vending Permits.

“Therefore, consumers should insist on seeing the permit at their favorite restaurant before providing service. We strongly urge street food vendors to request a Permit,” added the FDA.
