MANILA, Philippines — A volleyball fan is the first recipient of a scholarship for Ateneo de Manila University through volleyball player Bea de Leon, the school announced on Friday.
Raphaella Ayen Retuta, a supporter of De Leon, took to Twitter last April 2022 after receiving an acceptance letter from Ateneo. However, his scholarship application was rejected due to limited slots.
He shared his heartache through a tweet tagging his idol De Leon and basketball star Thirdy Ravena—both players from Ateneo.
“I wasn’t awarded the scholarship I wanted – but it’s nice to know that you want me, Ateneo. haay my dream school, in another life. I hope you’re proud of me [Bea De Leon] and [Thirdy Ravena],” then Retuning tweeted.
Ten months later, Retuta’s tweet earned him a scholarship from his idol De Leon.
Ateneo said that the BS Management became the first Bea De Leon scholar, a program officially established at the Loyola School through the signing of an agreement last January 27.
De Leon, a two-time UAAP champion and Season 81 Finals MVP, congratulated his first bachelor, who already student-leaders are active in high school and graduate with high honors.
“Congratulations @katorsero for being an exemplary student. I hope you can be an inspiration to others to keep working hard to achieve their dreams,” the Choco Mucho star wrote. “A lot of credit to the whole family as well. Dad, Mom, Kuya, I hope this is just the beginning!”
The ace middle blocker presented the scholarship to Retuta in an event attended by Det de Leon’s mother, Ateneo president Fr. Bobby Yap, SJ, Director of the University Development Office Fr Kit Bautista, SJ. Director of the Office of Admission and Assistance Dr. Jo-Ed Tirol, Assistant Director for Tin Magboo Scholarships, and Jerome Valdez Scholarship Officer.
De Leon, who is an athletic scholar, graduated from Ateneo in 2018 with a degree in AB Management Economics and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Sustainability Management. He was also a finalist for the 2018 Ambrosio Padilla Athlete of The Year award, while being a consistent Dean’s Lister.
