Eya Laure rallies Tigresses to show Lady Bulldogs are not invincible

MANILA, Philippines – Eya Laure made sure to instill in the minds of her young teammates that the University of Santo Tomas can compete at the National University level in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

And the Tigresses showed just as Laure led a collective effort to stun the previously-undefeated Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“When we saw that NU played five sets at Adamson, it seemed like we could do it. We can, too.’ They are human too. They make mistakes too,” said Laure after the big win. “We have to start with the brains that can. We can show what system we have. That’s why I shout that we can do it. We just have to believe.”

A VERY LONG TIME

Laure, who finished with 18 points off 14 kills and four blocks, including the match-winning block in Alyssa Solomon, emotional after they finally got a big win against the Lady Bulldogs, who have been competing since high school.

“I’m emotional and I get goosebumps because I remember the day when I line-up [of both teams] they still play against each other since high school. Before we just played in the Adamson gym. It feels good to play in front of so many fans, it’s a dream for NU and UST because before we played in a small arena,” Laure said in Filipino.

“Now, we can both show our potential in the whole country. I’m very happy because we’ve been rivals since high school. Regina (Jurado) is now part of our team as one of the talents from high school,” he added.

Laure was happy to see the growth as a team and became the first to beat the defending champions since April 27, 2019, when she and Sisi Rondina defeated the young team, 27-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16. .

“We are happy to see the growth of each other since high school. He is the defending champion and we want to learn from him. We study the game and work hard in practice. As the coach said, we just have to send ourselves in training and believe in our system,” said Laure.
