Local authorities reported on Tuesday that an explosion damaged a freight train in Russia’s Bryansk region, on the border with Ukraine, the second time there in two days.
The regional governor, Aleksandr V. Bogomaz, said in a post on the Telegram messaging app that an explosive device had detonated near the train station in Snezhetskaya, a town about 60 miles from the Ukrainian border, but had caused no deaths or injuries. .
The locomotive and about 20 cars derailed, according to a statement from Russian Railways, the train operator, which said a fire engine had been sent to the scene. However, the first video of the derailed train published online did not show the fire. It was not immediately clear what the train was carrying.
Also, a village in Bryansk located less than five miles from the border with Ukraine came under fire on Tuesday morning, causing a fire but no casualties, Mr. Bogomaz said. He blamed the Ukrainian military for the attack, but offered no evidence. These claims cannot be independently verified.
The governor did not specifically blame for the two train derailments. Ukraine has also denied the blasts, although Kyiv has generally maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding attacks on Russian territory.
The previous derailment came on Monday, when a freight train from Belarus transited the Bryansk region near the town of Unecha, about 60 miles east of the Ukrainian border. After the explosive device detonated, eight of the train’s 78 cars jumped the tracks and burst into flames, blocking traffic on the line. Rybar, a pro-war Russian military blog, posted a video on Telegram of the burning car, which it said was carrying oil and wood products.
As of Tuesday morning, train services on the line have been restored, Russian Railways said on Telegram. About 100 meters of railroad tracks, or about 330 feet, will need to be replaced, the company said.
The blast was the latest in a series of attacks to hit the region. On Sunday, Mr. Bogomaz said four people in the area were killed by Ukrainian attacks from across the border.
Russia has used areas close to Ukraine – including the Bryansk region, on Ukraine’s northern border – to launch attacks, fire rockets, launch airstrikes and other attacks during the 14-month war. The Ukrainian government has expressed growing concern that Moscow is using the Bryansk region to launch drone strikes.
