When filming a movie Rust on Thursday, October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that wounded the director and killed another crew member.
The incident took place at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department, the weapon was “discharged” by 30 Stones alum, 63, and deadline later it was reported that the production in Western has been paused.
“Mr. Baldwin came forward voluntarily to speak with investigators,” a sheriff’s office spokesman said Juan Rios noted in a statement, confirming that the situation will be treated like “another investigation.”
Detectives are trying to determine “what type of projectile was fired” as the set remains locked. Victim – director Joel Souza and director of photography Halyna Hutchins – they rushed to receive medical attention after being struck. Hutchins, 42, died at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
The 48-year-old filmmaker, for his part, was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center via helicopter. While the condition is initially unknown, deadline was told by Souza’s representative that he was released from the hospital on Friday, October 22.
The film’s production company, Rust Movie Productions LLC, noted in a statement about the accident, “The entire cast and crew are devastated by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones. We have stopped production film for an unspecified period of time and is cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation. We will provide counseling services to everyone involved in the film as we work to process this terrible event.
Hutchins is from Ukraine and had been sharing updates on the filming process with her Instagram followers before her death. “One of the perks of shooting in the west is that you can ride horses on your days off :),” he captioned a video of himself on Wednesday, October 20, while joining a group of horses.
The Emmy winner broke her silence on Hutchins’ death on Friday via Twitter, writing, “There are no words to express my shock and sadness at the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and colleague I admired. . I work with police investigation to solve this tragedy and I am in touch with her husband, offering support to her and her family. My heart is broken for her husband, her son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.
Before Baldwin addressed the incident, tributes were paid to the late cinematographer.
“I was surprised. I was very lucky to have Halyna Hutchins as my DP on ‘Archenemy,’” Joe Manganello tweeted. “Incredible talent & a wonderful person. I can’t believe this could happen in this day and age… a shot from a prop gun could kill a crew member? What a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to his family.”
