‘Everyone has a right to march to the ANC over load shedding’



The African National Congress (ANC) has been under tremendous pressure for some time now from all sectors of society, with everything seeming to go wrong for the ruling party, and subsequently, the country.

The ANC has been heavily criticized for its handling of the electricity crisis, and the never-ending load-shedding strikes, which are not only inconvenient but also damaging to the economy.

This week, the march of the main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) to the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House, has prompted questions about whether it would be more appropriate to march to Eskom.

Ahead of this week’s march by the DA, disgruntled citizens marched to the Union House last week on Friday, under the umbrella of #NotInMyName over load shedding as well as against Eskom’s 18.65% tariff increase approved by South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (Nersa). ).

Ramaphosa’s efforts to tackle the electricity crisis

The country’s president and ANC Cyril Ramaphosa was recently forced to cancel a trip to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos citing the energy crisis amid the implementation of phase 6 load shedding.

The President has held several meetings with stakeholders to address the power crisis.

Ramaphosa’s speech at the just-concluded ANC Free State provincial elective conference also focused on load shedding and Nersa-approved electricity tariff hikes which he described as a double whammy for residents due to increasing blackout frustration.
