MANILA, Philippines—Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial will not participate in the upcoming Asian Games due to a right hand injury.
Marcial appeared at the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association at the Diamond Hotel in Manila on Friday sporting a cast on his right arm.
“I can’t play in the next SEA Games because I can only start sparring on May 21. I have to have no contact activity for at least three more months,” said Marcial after receiving a citation for his achievements in boxing.
Marcial admitted that he has been feeling uneasy since last year’s SEA Games. Just last month, he put aside the pain again to compete at the professional level, stopping Ricardo Villalba in the second round of eight rounds at the Alamodome, Texas.
He opted for surgery before returning to the Philippines.
“As soon as I get these bandages off, I can go back to training,” Marcial said.
This year’s SEA Games will be held in May in Cambodia, which is only a month away.
But when Marcial comes back, he’ll be back swinging, not just at the amateur level, but at the professional level, where he’s learning fast.
“Now, I’m still building experience and rounds in the pro. I’m going step by step, starting from four, six to eight. Now I’m at the level of eight rounds but our goal is to have the world title [shot] next year,” Marcial said in Filipino.
Currently, there is no official opponent for the Olympic bronze medalist.
Currently, he holds a 4-0 record at the professional level.
