The new Chief Bawku enskinment is null and void – Avoka

Member of Parliament for Zebila, Cletus Avoka condemned the new Chief Bawku’s enskinment in Nalegiru on Wednesday, February 15.

He said the act was illegal.

Mr. Avoka said this at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday after leading five Members of Parliament from the Kusaug traditional area to register their opposition to the enskinment.

“This is unacceptable, and it should not come from a person of high rank. The power that is considered as such is illegal and will not be recognized by any institution under the 1992 Constitution.

“The Government of Ghana must take every step to ensure the maintenance of peace and security and hold the perpetrators of this crime accountable,” Mr. Avoka said.

The government has also condemned the new Bawku Naba enskinment.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Information stated that Asigri Azoka I is still Bawku Naba.

The King of Maprugu Traditional area Naa Bohugu Mahami I is reported to have enskinned Alhaji Seidu Abagre as the new chief for Bawku on Wednesday, February 15 at the Nayiri Palace in Nalerigu.

But the government in a statement condemned the act and ordered the security to arrest anyone who presents himself as such.

“The government condemns the development in Nalerigu today on February 15, 2023, regarding the deployment of the new Bawku Naba as illegal and a threat to National Security,” the government said.

“Government further reaffirms that Naa Asigri Azoka I is Bawku Naba, duly gazetted and a member of the National and Upper East Regional Council of Chiefs.

“Security agents have been directed to arrest and prosecute others claiming to be Bawku Nana,” he added.
