Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) may take control of the City of Ekurhuleni and the ANC return to the City of Joburg. That is if the plan by the opposition party in the two metros succeeded.
Discussions are underway at provincial and local levels involving the ANC, EFF and minority parties to oust the executive mayors of Ekurhuleni and Joburg metros, Tania Campbell and Mpho Phalatse, and install the ANC and EFF to run the metros. The smaller minority parties are part of the plot and will benefit through the deal currently being discussed.

More motions of no confidence were passed against the two Democratic Alliance (DA) mayors. Last year, an attempt to remove Campbell through a no-confidence motion failed, when Phalatse was successfully expelled but later reinstated when a court declared his expulsion illegal.
Details are still being covered
According to a source in Ekurhuleni close to the matter, the ANC, EFF and seven minority parties, known as the “super seven”, have agreed in principle, but the details are still being hashed out.
Ekurhuleni’s Super Seven includes the African Independent Congress, the Independent Citizens Movement, the National Freedom Party, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, the United Democratic Movement, the African Transformation Movement and the People’s Congress.
“The discussion is that the ANC should go back to the City of Joburg and the EFF and the super seven can do it for the ANC. In return, we are giving the EFF the opportunity to run the City of Ekurhuleni,” the source said.
Ekurhuleni leadership is targeted
In Ekurhuleni, the leadership troika was targeted. The first stage was the removal of Ekurhuleni Democratic Alliance speaker Raymond Dhlamini and DA council chairman whip Khetha Shandu through a motion of no confidence.
The super seven have tabled a motion of no confidence in Dhlamini and Shandu regarding their fitness to hold office as elected officials responsible for the council’s functions and the overall management of the City of Ekurhuleni.

His removal would leave Campbell vulnerable as mayor. Although super seven spokesperson Siphule Ntombela refused to elaborate until the move is confirmed as acceptable, a source close to the matter said the same reasoning followed in the first attempt to remove Campbell will be used against Dhlamini and Shandu.
“What will come from this is the removal of the mayor, for the same reason as the total collapse of the service,” he said.
