At Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered an additional sum of N900 million for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said the money was part of the funds held by some Deposit Money Banks since 2015, and refused to remit to the NHIS’ Treasury Single Account (TSA).
The commission amount was increased to N1.4 billion before it was released to the scheme on August 5, 2022.
The NHIS was established in 2004 to provide social health insurance in Nigeria under an arrangement where the health services of the contributors are paid for from a pool of public funds contributed by the participants of the scheme.
In January 2022, the agency is partnering with the EFCC to enhance the digital transformation of health insurance.
Recall that on February 10, 2022, the commission announced that it had remitted a tranche of N1.5 billion to the scheme in the same manner.
This, the commission said, was preceded by N1. 3 billion will also help the NHIS recover from the bank to the agency in September 2021.
‘NHIS’ N12 billion trapped’
The NHIS had disclosed in August 2021 that over N12 billion belonging to them was trapped in the bank.

The NHIS Executive Secretary, Muhammad Sambo, said this during a courtesy visit to the EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, on July 29, 2021, according to a statement from the EFCC.
Mr. Sambo said during the meeting that the EFCC has helped the agency to recover N5.4 billion since then.
“In total, the EFCC has been able to recover about N5.4billion for us out of the N12.085 billion that has been trapped; this is a monumental achievement and that is why we will ensure that we remain a good partner to the EFCC,” he said.
Mr. Sambo commended the EFCC for the recovery and assured that every kobo recovered would be utilized fairly.

Again, EFCC Returns N900 Million to NHIS
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has recovered an additional sum of N900,000,000 (Nine Hundred Million Naira) for the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.
The amount is part of the money that some Deposit Money Banks have been holding since 2015, and refused to send to the NHIS Treasury Single Account, TSA.
The recovered funds were released to the NHIS on February 8, 2023, two days after one year, while the Commission, on February 10, 2022, also released the sum of N1, 500,000,000.00 (One Billion Five Hundred Million Naira) recovered from the banks. to the NHS.

This is in addition to the N1, 400,000,000 (One Billion, Four Hundred Million Naira) previously released to the Scheme on August 5, 2022.
