EFCC intercepts N32.4m allegedly meant for vote buying

The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, on Friday, said operatives from the Lagos Zonal Command of the commission have taken the suspect into custody for further questioning.

The commission did not name the suspect in the statement.

PREMIUM TIMES reported on Tuesday that the EFCC will monitor and supervise Saturday’s general election.

The commission said it would deploy several personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja to combat vote buying.

Reports also said that the police have arrested a member of the House of Representatives with $498,100, and a distribution list in Rivers State.

The massive operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to prevent vote trading and other financial malfeasance ahead of tomorrow’s presidential and national elections may have paid dividends with the interception in Lagos of the sum of N32, 400,000 (Thirty Two Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) which was allegedly used to buy votes in Lagos. The recovery was carried out by operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Commission.

The suspect involved has been detained for further investigation

The Chairman of the Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa has asked all personnel of the Commission assigned to the duty of monitoring the Elections to show courage and not give room to unscrupulous people to undermine the integrity of elections through financial incentives.

Tactical operations teams are now present in all states of the federation and the FCT. A telephone hotline has been circulated through social media for members of the public to share information about financial malpractice with Commission agents. Details of the number are available on EFCC social media platforms.

Members of the public are encouraged to report anyone trying to buy or sell votes using the EFCC financial crime reporting App, Eagle Eye, available for download on the Google Play or Apple stores. They can also reach the Commission through their social media handle, @officialefcc or via email, info@efcc.gov.ng.
