EC Served Others Waakye, Jollof In Strongroom; I Only Took Tea – Rojo Mettle-Nunoo | General News

Rojo Mettle Nunoo, a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opened up about the infamous ‘tea without biscuits’ treat he received from the Electoral Commission (EC) during the 2020 general elections.

Rojo is the representative of the NDC in the EC strong room, which is the gathering center of the president, defending the interests of the party and its candidate John Dramani Mahama.

When Mahama went to the High Court to challenge the results of the election, Rojo was one of the three witnesses who were boxed.

In his testimony, it was revealed that he took tea when he went to the office of the EC chairman, Jean Mensah, for a scheduled meeting on some NDC concerns.

Addressing the issue of drinking tea while on duty for an important job at the EC, he told Citi FM (February 24) that he does not regret drinking tea and others are given solid food.

“I will always drink tea because you said Atta Mills drinks tea, Atta Mills always drinks coffee. Now you say Rojo goes to EC to drink tea. They serve others waakye and jollof and so on.

“Didn’t you ask if they also eat waakye and jollof?” I drink tea, and only take water from the EC and have my own tea bags,” he said.

Rojo reiterated that he went to see Jean Mensah who came out of the consultation office, “when I was there I needed fluids in my throat and Kpessa-Whyte was in the strong room.

“They offered me all the other things (waakye, jollof) and I offered them to the security agency there, find out. I never touched the food. I just went and drank tea in the waiting room to see Jean Mensah, I’m not kidding, ” he said.

Rojo, as an election petition witness appeared in the Supreme Court via video conference due to illness.

The court unanimously dismissed the petition paving the way for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to serve a second and final term that will expire in 2025.

Ahead of the 2024 polls, Mahama is considered to be the flag bearer of the NDC with one of his main challengers being Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Minister of Finance.

Rojo became one of the key members of Duffuor’s campaign team.
