Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was welcomed with great enthusiasm in Kumasi for the inauguration and handing over of the Kumasi Central Mosque.
Dr. Bawumia funded the reconstruction of the iconic mosque into an ultra-modern complex with capacity increased from 4000 to 7000 as well as providing an office complex for the Imam and Chief Zongo, conference rooms, and other facilities.
Present at the ceremony were Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Ministers of State, MPs, National Chief Imams, Regional Imams, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and many Muslims.
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by many members of the NPP House of Representatives from the Ashanti Region and beyond in a move that underlined his immense popularity in the NPP.
When he arrived on the field with the National High Priest, the enthusiastic crowd showered him with songs of praise, in awe and appreciation of his attitude towards the people of Kumasi.
The old Kumasi Central Mosque is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in the country.
The transformation significantly raised its status to a modern mosque of international standards.
