A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has hit back at the National Identification Authority (NIA) following the response he received after he criticized the authority.

Prof. Gyampo has hit out at the NIA over the challenge of registering Ghanaians amid the Electoral Commission’s proposal to make the Ghana card the only identification document to register to vote.

The lecturer also said that the NIA has a “trust deficit” tag. strongly rejected by the Authority in the rejoinder.

In the NIA’s answer, Prof. Gyampo affirmed that, the answer of the National Identification Authority “is covered in half-truths and this is what is called propaganda.” You can laugh at yourself and laugh only in an effort to protect your job. But some of us will not allow you to throw Ghana into chaos and flee the country with Diplomatic or Service Passports”.

He used the opportunity to advise the NIA to address the glaring challenges in the system and also engage with the Minority in Parliament instead of using “great Britain to deny the challenges that are staring them in the face”.

So, it is not a big deal if other famous statesmen and women appreciate the move of having a Ghana card.

However, what is at issue is the disagreement over the use of the Ghana Card as the sole source document for voter registration and the fact that the NIA has an insurmountable challenge that top officials only share in private. We need a Ghanaian card but let’s hurry. There is no point in this inordinate haste that creates unnecessary suspicion that tends to lead to implosion, because how the use of the Ghana card alone, as a source document for voter registration, can have a major impact on the electoral fortunes of political parties. .

Instead of quoting what dead founders of political parties have said in support of the Ghana Card, let the NIA listen to the voices of the living about the dangers of intransigence and refusing to build a consensus on the use of the Card as the sole document for voter registration. Let NIA and Prof. Attafuah not use eloquence and big English to dismiss the challenge that stares at us in the face. Prof. Attafuah was in parliament and he saw the reaction of the minority group. Using one side of Dominic Ayine’s argument on the radio to support the counter view that, the NIA does not have a confidence deficit, is quite disingenuous. Professors should analyze things from a holistic point of view.
