The Chief Executive of Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipality (KEEA), Solomon Ebow Appiah said that in Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, he talks about basic needs including sex and when people are in prison for a long time. 15, 20, 60 years without sex, and then something reduces the basic needs.
According to him, if the state does not observe the law that prohibits lesbianism and gayism will be flauted in prison because people can come to prison to learn this act, because there is no opportunity for them (Prisoners) to meet their basic needs. which sex.
Mr. Appiah made the appeal at the first non-formal education graduation ceremony of 43 inmates of Ankaful Prison in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipality.
He requested that the state should find a way to brainstorm to find a way to include sex as a basic need for inmates after providing all other needs.
“We have a criminal libel law in the past, it took the president then who realized that the law has been on the books for so long; which hindered the work of journalists and impeded the right of reportage. But took the initiative. The president and the collective agreement of Ghanaians to return the law, and now there is freedom of information. So, if journalists have the right to information and reporting, then prisoners should also have it, even if they are in prison, they should be part of us, because no matter how long they will be released one day after the end of their sentence, and they will return home and return to society, so there is a need for reform. he signaled.
He said that the line between inmates and free people is very thin, so those in prisons like us, so if we don’t make the prison yard and the life of the inmates very conducive, then we are creating problems for the country.
He called on everyone to join in supporting the Prisoners as they are being trained to change their lives, thus, “Prison is meant to reform and reintegrate into the community”.
The Deputy Director of the Central Regional Prison who is also the OKI of the Maximum Security Prison, DDP Robin Kwesi Asamoah Fenning on his part thanked the non-formal education sector for the training and requested immediate assistance from stakeholders, benevolent, religious bodies, NGOs, corporate institutions and etc. to assist in registering 43 inmates to participate in the Basic Education Certificate Examination this year.
