He is mixing up names, unable to accurately answer questions asked of him, and rambling about old grievances out of context. Republicans are pretending he is mentally intact, while most of us realize he not. Democrats acknowledged Biden’s age had slowed him down considerably and urged him to cease a bid for a 2nd term. Republicans do not care about Trump’s memory is fading and his inability to articulate ideas in a cohesive way because they are willing to trade the safety of the country for political power.

It is hard to decide which is worse: Trump saying he and Willie Brown, the mayor of San Francisco, were once in a helicopter together that nearly crashed OR when Brown denied that it happened Trump doubled down and insisted that it did. The truth is Trump once shared a helicopter ride with former Los Angeles Councilman Nate Holden that almost crashed. Holden, who is black like Willie Brown, commented “I guess we all look alike”. Whether it’s a memory issue or a delusion, Trump’s insistance that it was Willie Brown in the helicopter with him is weird and concerning. He is even threatening to sue the New York Times for printing an article about the falseness of the helicopter story.

Narcissists crave attention and admiration. They have an exaggerate sense of their value and importance. They will lie, cheat, and will injure people emotionally or physically to gain admiration and loyalty.  They are unable to emotionally manage rejection or loss of stature and are prone to violent retaliation to protect their fragile egos. This diagnosis explains why Trump focuses on crowd size, poll numbers, and his social media following. It is also why he is obsessed with money. He must rely on external measures to combat his toxic shame. His bromances with dictators is part of his narcissistic hunger to feel powerful and relevant. People with high self esteem do not need to lie, obsessively brag, denegrate others, and bully. Narcissism is a serious mental disorder and thousands of mental health professionals have concurred that Trump exhibits all of the characteristics.
