After yesterday’s indictment, Trump issued a propaganda message about how he is the victim of a political attack by corrupt leftists who want to destroy American democracy. Trump has relied on the use of gaslighting to escape responsibility for attacks on the rule of law throughout his presidency. Like many sociopathic autocrats, Trump’s lawlessness is on the rise and evidence of his possible guilt in many crimes has made the justice system accountable. Trump has disrespected democracy for 6 years by committing fraud, spreading propaganda, violating American political norms and values and befriending dictators.

Trump admires Richard Nixon. Respect for him increased after the Watergate scandal. Political analysts speculate that Trump admired Nixon trying to influence the presidential election process in his favor by supporting the break-in of the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Despite evidence that Nixon committed crimes against the democratic process of the United States, Trump’s perception of the presidency is in line with Nixon’s famous quote, “if the president does it, it’s not illegal.”

Trump’s allies are suspiciously defending Trump in a pattern of devastating attacks on the Constitution and American values. He is now declaring the charges to be an attack on democracy without knowing what the charges against him are. He labeled the indictment and the true investigation a witch hunt because Trump insisted the allegations were false. Have his allies and supporters forgotten the other crimes for which Trump has been accused or convicted? So far, the administration has failed to do its duty to hold Trump accountable for his criminal behavior. Not holding him accountable has made Trump increasingly spread disinformation and use harsh rhetoric against his opponents. These proven criminal facts strengthen Trump’s possible guilt in the Stormy Daniels case and other potential indictments from a New York grand jury.
