California prosecutors on Wednesday dropped domestic violence charges against Justin Roiland, creator of the Cartoon Network animated series Rick and Morty and provided the voices of the show’s two title characters.
Orange County District Attorney spokeswoman Kimberly Edds said the two felony charges involving the ex-boyfriend were dropped “due to a lack of sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Roiland responded to the firing on Twitter.
“I always knew the claims were false – and I never doubted that this day would come,” he said. “I am grateful that this case has been dismissed but, at the same time, I am still shocked by the horrible lies that have been reported about me during this process.”
He said he was “disappointed that so many people are quick to judge without knowing the facts, just based on the words of a bitter ex who tried to go through the process and I was ‘undone.’
Roiland intends to ‘restore my good name’
Roiland, 43, has been awaiting trial on charges of physical injury and false imprisonment by threat, fraud, violence or deception against the woman, with whom he lives. He was not identified in court documents.
The allegation dates back to May 2020, but apparently went unnoticed by media outlets until NBC News reported it in January of this year.
Roiland and Dan Harmon created an animated sci-fi sitcom about a mad scientist and his grandson, both voiced by Roiland. It has aired for six seasons on Cartoon Network as part of the Adult Swim night programming block, and has been renewed seven times.
Adult Swim and Cartoon Network cut ties with her when the allegations were reported and said her role would be cancelled. 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals, which produced the other two animated series Roiland worked on, are doing the same.
The company declined to comment on Wednesday.
In his tweet, Roiland said he was “determined to move forward and focus on creative projects and restoring my good name.”
