Ghana’s digital drive led by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia received another measure of vindication Monday as it emerged at the top of the newly released West Africa Digital Competitiveness Index.
Ghana scored 66% in the index, half a percentage point more than Cape Verde in second place. Nigeria completed the top three with a score of 65%.
The index was compiled by the pan-African think tank Digital Foundation Africa, which announced through a statement that “The index measures, access and rankings carried out by West African countries, which are adopted when using good policies among the use of other digital services. growth mapping from the digital development sector to socio-economic transformation”.
The index is compiled using approximately 10 variables ranging from Mobile Money & Online transactions to Digital Infrastructure & Policy implementation.
“The ranking will guide the ECOWAS countries in their approach to the implementation and development of the digital sector, thus translating into the way citizens transact and use digital in their daily lives. After the release of the index, activities will be held to involve the government and other stakeholders of each country to help the direction and future of the digital sector,” the statement said.

Bawumia, whose digital advocacy led him to be named one of the most influential leaders in Africa, has postulated digitalization as a solution to most of the problems plaguing African countries.
As a result, digitization has been used as a tool to make life better for Ghanaians under the leadership of the Vice President.
Milestones achieved during Bawumia’s digital era include the national identification card system (Ghana card), digital property address system, mobile money interoperability, ghana.gov platform and digital operations at Ports, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Passport offices etc.
Others include the National Electronic Pharmacy Platform (NEPP), using drones to deliver medical supplies, and a comprehensive network of all government hospitals, among others.
In 2022, Ghana’s digital progress was recognized by Mobile World Congress Africa after being named No.1.
