English translation of Chinese daily newspaper, Global Times (GT), reported a new development on February 6, 2023. According to the report, the holiday launched 200 activities for China’s digital assets across the country.

The donation from the local government is more than 180 million e-CNY worth $26.6 million. The donation boosts consumption of digital assets during holiday celebrations. This includes consumption coupons, subsidies, and other programs related to e-CNY.

This activity for e-CNY marks the first time the government is spreading its digital tentacles after the lifting of the COVID-19 restrictions.

The report noted that Jinan in Shandong Province and Lianyungang in Jiangsu Province, all in East China, carried out such e-CNY activities during the festive period. In addition, these cities are also giving out digital yuan coupons to many residents.

The local government of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province is among those using the digital yuan to boost business by subsidizing some costs. It reportedly issued more than 100 million e-CNY worth $14.7 million to subsidize the city’s catering industry.

Administrators Use Promotions and Upgrades to Implement KPIs

China Daily reported about Hangzhou digital yuan for citizens. It is said that the government gave e-CNY vouchers worth 80 yuan ($12) to each resident, which totaled 4 million yuan worth $590,000.

The Global Times report confirmed that Meituan, an e-commerce platform, is handling the issuance of e-CNY for the Hangzhou city government. In addition, it is noted that the New Year’s giveaway for this resident was completed in less than 10 seconds.

Commercial institutions are also part of the promotion with digital yuan during the celebration. They are involved in various areas such as transportation, supermarkets, mobile communication, tourism, etc.

In general, the Chinese government has adopted more features and targets to increase the use and adoption of CBDCs in recent months. Local news, JS China, reported some of the results of a meeting of senior Communist Party officials in Suzhou.
