Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Vice Presidential Candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has commiserated with the police in the country and the families of police officers killed by gunmen in Anambra State.
The State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, who briefed journalists on the matter on Saturday in Asaba, said the officers were ambushed and killed at about 1.30pm on Friday on Ihiala-Orlu Road enroute Umuahia, while on official duty.
He named the slain officers as Inspectors Lucky Aleh, Celestine Nwadiokwu and Jude Obuh, who were attached to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit at the Government House, Asaba.
He said the late officers will be missed for their contributions to the peace and development of the Delta.
Mr. Aniagwu described the killing of the officers as barbaric and unacceptable in a country that wants to reunify for peace and development.
“The officers met their untimely death while they were on the advance team for the PDP National Campaign Rally in Abia.
“Unfortunately this special team deviated from the convoy and took a different route than the convoy was going.
“He was attacked on Ihiala-Orlu road on Umuahia road by non-state actors who ended up killing three people in police uniform while the mufti escaped.

“We have recovered the bodies and have also reached their families,” he said.
The commissioner said some accounts of the unfortunate incident trending on social media were untrue.
He said the state government delayed the announcement of the untimely death as efforts were made to reach out to the families before making the announcement.
The murderer must be brought to book
Mr. Aniagwu called on security agencies in the country to fish out the killers and bring them to book so that Nigerians can live in peace anywhere in the country.

“What is happening in some states now, especially in the South East, is not healthy for our development as a country because the elections are so close.
“The requested security is not only for election purposes. It’s also what everyone wants. We must be able to have security at any given time; that way, we will have development.
“We must also appeal to our brothers and sisters who may have picked up guns because of what they see as agitation to understand that the best way to help our people is to let peace reign,” he said.

“Our people in the south-east are very energetic, trade-oriented and have developed a love for each other over the years.
“We will appeal to our brothers and sisters to allow this kind of love that permeated the atmosphere in the past in the southeast, to continue to permeate the environment.

“We ask them to take up their swords and therefore allow the love that the people of the southeast have known for many years, so that as a people, we will continue to live together.”
Mr. Aniagwu prayed for the repose of the souls of the slain officers and for God to comfort their families.
“As the government of Delta, we are with the family at this difficult time,” he said.
