Please sit down! David Letterman has made his name as a popular comedian and late night TV host.
“I knew exactly what I wanted to do. My sophomore year in high school they offered a public speaking class. So I jumped right in,” the Indiana native said during a May 2015 appearance on CBS Sunday Morning. “The first day of class, everybody had to stand up and give an impromptu speech about themselves. And I got up when it was my turn and I gave a speech for, I guess, two minutes or so. And I sat down and I said, ‘Wow, that’s easy,’ to me. And I’ve never said that about any other class in my academic career before or since. …I couldn’t do it in any other class.”
The Mark Twain Award winner, who got his start on TV as a local weatherman in Indianapolis, rose to fame in the 1970s when he began his career in stand-up comedy. In 1978, Letterman landed a gig at Mary Tyler Moore Mary variety show and on Johnny Carson Tonight Show.
“It’s an adrenaline rush. That’s what it is. And then you sit down and talk to Johnny,” Letterman told the CBS anchor. Jane Pauley in 2015. “And it’s like you’re sitting on your knees at the Lincoln Memorial and Lincoln is talking to you. You know, like, ‘My God, the guy on the $5 bill is talking to me.’
After a string of popular comedy appearances, the Mork & Mindy alum landed the first morning show. The David Letterman Show premiered in 1980, almost two years before Letterman was entrusted to lead NBC’s At night. (Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers has replaced Letterman.)
“[Johnny] Carson was my role model,” Letterman said New York Magazine in March 2017, explaining the initial hesitation to make political jokes. “Everything changed because of that Jon Stewart … he made it so that not doing political things should be the elephant in the room. And there it is [the news story of] Monica Lewinsky and President Clinton. It’s hard to ignore.
He added at the time: “We always look for the easiest path, the most obvious joke. … We change our attitude to make it easier for ourselves. And again, what defense do you have for ignoring the topic? No, really. “
The Indiana native finally moved on At Late Show With David Lettermanwhich aired on CBS, in 1992. Letterman hosted the show for nearly 23 years before retiring, Stephen Colbert take over the time slot. Two years later, the Peabody Award winner returned to TV for him My Next Guest Needs No Introduction series on Netflix. He has been interviewed like Will Smith, Kim Kardashian and activists Malala Yousafzai for the streaming giant.
“Everybody came up to me and asked, ‘What are you going to do?’ And I kept saying, ‘Well, jeez, I’m doing what I want,'” Letterman said The New York Times in August 2017.”[This new show] that’s what I want at this stage of my life.
In his personal life, the founder of Worldwide Pants has become his wife Regina Lasko more than twenty years. Letterman and Lasko – who have a son Harry, born in 2003 – married in March 2009. The Emmy Award winner, who was previously married to Michelle Cook seven years, admitted six months after the nuptials that he had been unfaithful, having affairs with some women who worked for him in The Late Show.
“There’s no one to blame but me,” Letterman explained during an OWN interview in January 2013. “I think if you’re going to have a flowchart of responsibility for this situation, this sex scandal, my name is at the top. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m responsible, trying to redeem myself.
At End of the Fun Facts Show the author and Lasko finally work through the struggle and stay together. “I can not forgive that behavior,” said during the 2013 sit-down. “I’m still trying to fix it. Not gone yet. It won’t go away.”
