D Jay addresses the importance of finding identity in music
Ghanaian musician D Jay has echoed the importance of artists finding and tapping into the sound that makes them unique and showing their authenticity.
Promoting his new single, Mourning Stress, on 3FM, D Jay notes that musicians can experiment with sound until they find what suits them.
“It took me a year to get this voice,” he told Giovani. “As an artist, you have to find your voice. So that’s when I went down Balance It and seeing that the reception was very positive, I said that I should stick with this voice.
He also advises musicians to review their style and sound to match the needs of consumers if necessary.
D Jay reveals how his unique voice landed him a feature with Nigerian musician Mr. Eazi plus a record label deal on Empawa Business.
“I was just online, and I saw a text message. He was like, I’ve heard a song. It’s fire. So I saw this as an opportunity to get him in a song,” D Jay recounted his interaction with Mr. Eazi.
“I have had some people (record labels) reach out and all, by the grace of God, but then I have to sit down and follow what I think is more for me. So I went to Empawa.”
Addressing concerns about sounding Nigerian while singing, D Jay agreed with co-host Crystal Kwame-Arye that she sings Afrobeat without trying to imitate anyone.
“When I write music, I don’t try to speak like a Ghanaian or a Nigerian. I just do my job.”
Morning Stress it’s one of D Jay’s yet-to-be-released EPs this year.
